Root reinforcement: continuum framework for constitutive modelling

چکیده
The mechanical contribution of plant roots to soil strength has typically been studied at the ultimate limit state only. Since many geotechnical problems are related serviceability, such as deformation infrastructure, a new constitutive modelling framework is introduced. rooted treated composite material with separate relationships for and roots, comprehensive stress–strain relationship root constituent presented. model compared direct shear experiments on field reinforced gorse, grass willow well an existing reinforcement based Winkler-spring supported beam theory. results show that both newly developed beam-type yield good predictions evolution root-reinforced function increasing displacements. Both successfully capture large deformations required reach peak reinforcement, reduction in due breakage presence significant even after very deformations, associated slippage. fibre models only require physically meaningful input parameters, they can be useful tools study mobilisation simulate response continuum-based numerical simulations.

Continuum and Non-continuum Modelling of Nanofluidics
Recent development in nanoand biotechnology has opened a new field of microand nanofluidics. Many MEMS (micro-electro-mechanical-systems) and NEMS ( nano-electromechanical-systems ) are based on the fluid motion. Additionally, the analysis of biological samples, drug design and nanomedicine are connected to nanoliter fluid flow. The challenge for understanding such small systems lies in the dif...
متن کاملConstitutive modelling of arteries
This review article is concerned with the mathematical modelling of the mechanical properties of the soft biological tissues that constitute the walls of arteries. Many important aspects of the mechanical behaviour of arterial tissue can be treated on the basis of elasticity theory, and the focus of the article is therefore on the constitutive modelling of the anisotropic and highly nonlinear e...
متن کاملConstitutive modelling of passive myocardium: a structurally based framework for material characterization.
In this paper, we first of all review the morphology and structure of the myocardium and discuss the main features of the mechanical response of passive myocardium tissue, which is an orthotropic material. Locally within the architecture of the myocardium three mutually orthogonal directions can be identified, forming planes with distinct material responses. We treat the left ventricular myocar...
متن کاملA Constitutive Model for Sands
In this paper, an elastoplastic constitutive model is presented for predicting sandy soil behavior under monotonic and cyclic loadings. The model is based on the CJS3 model that takes into account deviatoric and isotropic mechanisms of plasticity. The flow rule in deviatoric mechanism is non-associated and a kinematic hardening law controls the evolution of the
yield surface. In the present...
متن کاملConstitutive modelling of passive myocardium
The objective of this final project is to demonstrate that during the past ten weeks, you have learned to read state of the art continuum mechanics literature. Gerhard Holzapfel and Ray Ogden, two leading scientists in continuum biomechanics, have recently published a manuscript that introduces a new continuum mechanics model for passive cardiac muscle tissue. 1 Read the publication and try to ...
